Ali is an upper class Muslim man, whose family holds a great deal of power in Baku, Azerbaijan. At that time, before World War One, Azerbaijan was part of the Russian Empire. Nino, Ali's lover, is from neighboring Georgia and is Christian, but the two are deeply in love and elope to the countryside. The story follows the two, who get married, through World War One, which only sees some of Ali's friends sent off to war. After the Russians surrender, however, conflict comes to Baku. Ali fights the Bolsheviks with the Azerbaijani militia and Nino helps nurse wounded soldiers during the March Days massacre in Baku.

Set in turn of the century Baku at the dawn of the 20th century, a young man wishes to marry. Since he is a rich and successful business man, despite his young age, he feels that he should have his pick of any bride that he fancies, however, Azerbanjani tradition dictates otherwise. He then decides to get stealthy about the matter and disguises himself as a mere cloth peddler. As the peddler, a young woman falls in love with him, but grieves that he father will not marry her to a mere peddler. Young Askar then reveals who his he to her father and asks for he hand in marriage. Seeing that he is indeed a wealthy young man, the father hardly agrees and the two are permitted to marry. In the borderline between Iran and Azerbaijan, across which people of two nations speak the same language, an Azerbaijani soldier falls in love with an Iranian girl from the nomad tribes herding at border areas. However, as it is not possible for the two to have a face-to-face communication, the soldier is advised by his Iranian fellow soldier, who patrolling the border bridge alongside him, to correspond with her. But they recognize that the alphabets used by the two nations are different, although they speak the same language. Therefore, the Iranian soldier decides to translate the letters and, in this way, they gradually learn the language of each other, however..
