Born into a theatrical family in New York City (his mother, 'Jeanne Button' (qv), was a Broadway costume designer, and his father, Stephen Arnold Sbarge, was a writer, painter and filmmaker), 'Raphael Sbarge' (qv) began acting at the age of 4, appearing in several episodes of _Sesame Street (1969)_ (qv).He has went on to appear in dozens of films, including _Risky Business (1983)_ (qv), _Independence Day (1996)_ (qv), _Message in a Bottle (1999)_ (qv), _Vision Quest (1985)_ (qv), _Pearl Harbor (2001)_ (qv) and _The Duel (2016)_ (qv). His resume includes more than 100 guest appearances and series regular roles on network television shows, among them Dr. Hopper and Jiminy Cricket on _Once Upon a Time (2011)_ (qv); David Molk on _Murder in the First (2014)_ (qv); and Jake Straka on _The Guardian (2001)_ (qv). He has recurred on series including _Star Trek: Voyager (1995)_ (qv), _Dexter (2006)_ (qv) and _Prison Break (2005)_ (qv).Raphael has also worked behind the camera, directing and producing the streaming series _Jenna's Studio (2013)_ (qv) and _On Begley Street (2013)_ (qv). He later turned his attention to documentaries, directing and producing _Is There Hope for Planet Earth (2014)_ (qv), _A Concrete River: Reviving the Waters of Los Angeles (2015)_ (qv) and _LA Foodways (2019)_ (qv), (a one-hour feature and six-part series), for which he earned an Emmy nomination. In 2020 he completed a feature version of _The Tricky Part (2019)_ (qv), the Obie Award-winning Off-Broadway play written and performed by 'Martin Moran' (qv). Upcoming releases include a feature documentary, _Only in Theatres (2021)_ (qv), about the family behind Laemmle Theatres, and _Watts Action (2021)_ (qv) (2021), a documentary about the Civil Rights leaders of the Southern Los Angeles neighborhood. His first narrative short film effort as a director, _The Bird Who Could Fly (2017)_ (qv), earned best short honors from the Asians on Film and First Glance film festivals, and best narrative short honors and nominations from the DisOrient Film Festival and Asian American International Film Festival.Raphael made his Broadway debut at the age of 16, in "The Curse of the Aching Heart", opposite 'Faye Dunaway' (qv). His extensive theater experience includes four additional Broadway shows: "Ah Wilderness" with 'Jason Robards' (qv); "Shadow Box" with 'Mercedes Ruehl' (qv); "Voices in the Dark," with 'Judith Ivey' (qv); and "Twilight of the Golds" (including the pre-Broadway national tour and the Kennedy Center). He has performed on stage with 'Al Pacino' (qv), 'Frank Langella' (qv), 'Colleen Dewhurst' (qv), 'Blythe Danner' (qv) and 'Gwyneth Paltrow' (qv), among many others.Raphael has won the LA Drama Critics Award (for "Mad Forest" at the Matrix Theatre), the San Francisco Film Critics Circle Garland Award (lead performance in "Twilight of the Golds") and the FANY Award ("Voices in the Dark").
