Filmmaker 'Denis Sanders' (qv) was born on January 21, 1929, in New York City. Denis studied film at the University of California. In 1954 he won an Academy Award for Best Short Subject for his masters' thesis student project _A Time Out of War (1954)_ (qv). He and his brother 'Terry Sanders' (qv) collaborated on the script for the 1958 film adaptation of 'Norman Mailer' (qv)'s novel "The Naked and the Dead" (_The Naked and the Dead (1958)_ (qv).In 1969 Sanders won a second Oscar for the documentary _Czechoslovakia 1918-1968 (1969)_ (qv). He also directed a handful of fictional features. 'George Hamilton' (qv) made his first credited appearance in _Crime & Punishment, USA (1959)_ (qv), while the powerful anti-war knockout _War Hunt (1962)_ (qv) boasted the acting debuts of future stars 'Robert Redford' (qv) and 'Tom Skerritt' (qv). Sanders' other directorial credits include the unjustly neglected drama _Shock Treatment (1964)_ (qv), the nifty rock concert documentaries _Elvis: That's the Way It Is (1970)_ (qv) and _Soul to Soul (1971)_ (qv), and the gloriously sexy and outrageous drive-in exploitation cult favorite _Invasion of the Bee Girls (1973)_ (qv). In addition to his film work, he also directed episodes of such TV series as _Naked City (1958)_ (qv), _Preston & Preston (1961)_ (qv). _The Great Adventure (1963)_ (qv), _Route 66 (1960)_ (qv) and _Mannix (1967)_ (qv). Outside of his movie and television work, he was also a professor at San Diego State University (he started teaching there in 1980).
