Walter Murch

'Walter Murch' (qv) has been editing sound in Hollywood since starting on 'Francis Ford Coppola' (qv)'s film _The Rain People (1969)_ (qv). He edited sound on _American Graffiti (1973)_ (qv) and _The Godfather: Part II (1974)_ (qv), won his first Academy Award nomination for _The Conversation (1974)_ (qv), won his first Oscar for _Apocalypse Now (1979)_ (qv), and won an unprecedented double Oscar for Best Sound and Best Film Editing for his work on _The English Patient (1996)_ (qv). Most recently he helped reconstruct _Touch of Evil (1958)_ (qv) to 'Orson Welles' (qv)' original notes, and edited _The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)_ (qv). Mr. Murch was, along with 'George Lucas' (qv) and 'Francis Ford Coppola' (qv), a founding member of northern California cinema. Mr. Murch has directed --_Return to Oz (1985)_ (qv) -- and longs to do so again, but as an editor and sound man he is one of the few universally acknowledged masters in his field. For his work on the film "_Apocalypse Now (1979)_ (qv)", Walter coined the term "sound designer", and along with colleagues such as 'Ben Burtt' (qv), helped to elevate the art and impact of film sound to a new level.::Harry Caul
