British director 'Charles Frend' (qv) started his film career as an editor, and worked on several 'Alfred Hitchcock' (qv) films, including _Secret Agent (1936)_ (qv) and _Young and Innocent (1937)_ (qv). He later worked for MGM at Elstree Studios, where he edited such films as _A Yank at Oxford (1938)_ (qv) and _Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939)_ (qv). He made his directorial debut in 1942 and turned out several low-budget dramas and documentaries. After the war he directed several critically acclaimed dramas, including _The Cruel Sea (1953)_ (qv) and _Scott of the Antarctic (1948)_ (qv). His final film as director was _The Sky-Bike (1967)_ (qv) and the film on which he ended his career was _Ryan's Daughter (1970)_ (qv), on which he worked as a second-unit director.::frankfob2@yahoo.com
