Luana Anders

Born Luana Margo Anderson on May 12, 1938, 'Luana Anders' (qv) began her show-business career as a bike messenger at MGM along with fellow thespians 'Jack Nicholson' (qv), 'Sandra Knight' (qv) and future film producers 'George Edwards' (qv) and 'Fred Roos' (qv). She convinced Nicholson to join her in her improv acting class with legendary teacher and veteran character actor 'Jeff Corey' (qv); her other classmates included 'Sally Kellerman' (qv), 'Richard Chamberlain' (qv), director/producer 'Roger Corman' (qv) and screenwriter 'Robert Towne' (qv). Luana began her acting career in her teens in such 1950s "B" movies as _Reform School Girl (1957)_ (qv) (alongside her lifelong friend 'Sally Kellerman' (qv)) and _Life Begins at 17 (1958)_ (qv), in which she co-starred with actor (and future producer) 'Mark Damon' (qv). She also worked with Damon in 'Roger Corman' (qv)'s _The Young Racers (1963)_ (qv). The sound man on "The Young Racers" asked her if she wanted to star in his first directing effort. The sound man was 'Francis Ford Coppola' (qv) and Anders played the conniving and duplicitous Louise Haloran in Coppola's debut feature, _Dementia 13 (1963)_ (qv).She played 'Vincent Price' (qv)'s sister Catherine Medina in Corman's _Pit and the Pendulum (1961)_ (qv). Anders acted opposite 'Charles Grodin' (qv) and 'John Gabriel' (qv) in _Sex and the College Girl (1964)_ (qv). Luana was in three pictures for director 'Curtis Harrington' (qv): ingénue Ellen Sands in _Night Tide (1961)_ (qv), a cameo as a party guest in _Games (1967)_ (qv) and repressed librarian Louise in the perverse _The Killing Kind (1973)_ (qv). Anders achieved cult status as groovy hippie commune dweller Lisa in _Easy Rider (1969)_ (qv). 'Robert Altman' (qv) frequently credited Luana with getting his career started; she has a small role as a streetwalker 'Sandy Dennis' (qv) picks up in Altman's _That Cold Day in the Park (1969)_ (qv). Friend 'Jack Nicholson' (qv) made a point of seeing and commenting on the movie during the Cannes film festival where "Easy Rider" won the Palme D'or; the subsequent publicity gave Altman the notoriety to launch his career. She frequently acted in films with real-life good friend Nicholson; she was especially memorable as a Buddhist chanting party girl in _The Last Detail (1973)_ (qv). Luana was terrorized by a deranged 'Mickey Rooney' (qv) on an abandoned studio backlot in the unreleased gonzo oddity _The Manipulator (1971)_ (qv) and starred in 'Robert Downey Sr.' (qv)'s _Greaser's Palace (1972)_ (qv). Anders appeared in _Shampoo (1975)_ (qv), a film that's reportedly based on her romance with hairdresser Richard Alcala; the picture was written by her friend and fellow Corey classmate 'Robert Towne' (qv).She had a recurring part on the daytime soap opera _Santa Barbara (1984)_ (qv). Among the TV shows Luana did guest spots on are _Hunter (1984)_ (qv), _Little House on the Prairie (1974)_ (qv), _Mannix (1967)_ (qv), _Bonanza (1959)_ (qv), _Der Chef (1967)_ (qv), _Dragnet 1967 (1967)_ (qv), _Hawaii Five-O (1968)_ (qv), _The Andy Griffith Show (1960)_ (qv), _One Step Beyond (1959)_ (qv), _The Outer Limits (1963)_ (qv), _Ben Casey (1961)_ (qv) and _The Rifleman (1958)_ (qv). Anders co-wrote the script for the comedy _Limit Up (1989)_ (qv) and was uncredited in scripting the action/adventure romp _Fire on the Amazon (1993)_ (qv), which was 'Sandra Bullock' (qv)'s debut film for 'Roger Corman' (qv). She appeared in a number of movies with collaborator 'Richard Martini' (qv), including _You Can't Hurry Love (1988)_ (qv), about which "Variety" declared, "It's about time we see the great 'Luana Anders' (qv) back on the screen". She was a member of the improvisational comedy stage group The Committee.
