Josephine Crowell

'Josephine Crowell' (qv) was a Canadian-born character actress. She appeared in vaudeville as early as 1879. On screen, she is best remembered for her dramatic portrayal of the mother in 'D.W. Griffith' (qv)'s _The Birth of a Nation (1915)_ (qv), her comedic performances in 'Harold Lloyd' (qv)'s _Speedy (1928)_ (qv) and 'Stan Laurel' (qv) and 'Oliver Hardy' (qv)'s _Wrong Again (1929)_ (qv). She also played a succession of queens and princesses in such films as _Main Street (1923)_ (qv), _Mantrap (1926)_ (qv), _The King of Kings (1927)_ (qv) and _The Man Who Laughs (1928)_ (qv).::A.
